Our hostess for 2017 Good Afro Hair and Salon Awards is the lovely Nana Akua.

Nana Akua Amoatemaa-Appiah was born in Newcastle-upon Tyne, her parents came from Ghana in the 60’s. The family relocated to America when she was 11 and she got a place at an all girls private boarding school in the UK due to her talent as a gymnast. This was where her journey really began. Sheer determination saw her through to University where she studied Business and Finance and realised her natural ability.

She worked for Kiss 100, setting up sponsorship and inventing Kiss clubs sponsored tours. She went on to Capital Radio where she was a major player developing and bringing in finance for their new online arm. Whilst at both stations, her voice was requested by her clients for commercials, so she began to do voice overs. In her spare time, Nana worked at The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Radio station where she learnt her craft as a DJ. On leaving Capital Radio, Richard Park spotted her talent and offered her a trainee post as a DJ for The Capital radio Café. She soon had her own Drivetime show at Fusion 107.3, a commercial station covering South East London.

Her passion was to demonstrate her skills on TV and a chance meeting led to a job as a launch presenter for Bid-up TV, then onto Price Drop TV. Her skills were recognised by the BBC and her tenacity led her to present the Primetime Holiday show on BBC One as well as live Gameshows on Sky One, Sky Movies, ITV and Brainbox broadcast across Africa.

Nana wanted to make more use of her Business and finance acumen and after presenting a money show pilot for BBC3, worked and appeared on Panorama exposing a mortgage scam and bringing developers to heel. Shortly after this Nana clinched the highly sought-after job as a live Continuity Announcer on BBC One and BBC TWO, leaving a year later to have her daughter and a well-deserved break.

She decided to return to television, to focus on her Business skills and combine these with her passion for health and Fitness. She became a fully qualified instructor and launched LadyXsize, a Fitness Guru and brand. She approached Fitness TV and soon acquired her own show ‘Fit Gear’. Not content with just presenting, she pitched a proposition to generate finance and create new shows for which she was awarded the role Head of Development and Sponsorship. She has also worked with Mr Motivator, helping him launch and generate finance for his Fitness program. Nana now presents a Health Show and a Saturday Breakfast show for the BBC and is mentored by Martha Kearney. Nana also hosts various TV shows and events, writes for numerous magazines, advises on Health and Fitness matters and runs LadyXsize Fitness.
