RELAXED: By Tola Okogwu of My Long Hair Journey

The key to long healthy relaxed hair is moisture, moisture and even more moisture. Relaxed hair is fragile so needs to be kept hydrated and supple to prevent breakage. Any good hair regimen will always incorporate frequent moisturising and so to help you along, here are my top 5 moisturisers for relaxed hair.

1. Kerastase Nutritive Sublimateur Jour

This lotion is for those with dry hair and whose use of heat is high. Part of the Kerastase Nutritive product line for dry sensitised hair, it is perfect for moisturising freshly straightened hair. It has a light creamy texture so it won’t weigh down your tresses or cause build-up.  It also helps reduce frizz, leaving hair with a soft and smooth finish. You can get Sublimateur Jour from official stockists and most online salon brand retailers.

2. Luster’s Scurl No Drip Curl Activator Moisturizer

This may seem like an odd choice for a moisturiser as it’s actually a product for those with curly or wavy hair; but trust me; this product is a moisturising powerhouse. Its real charm for relaxed hair is its ability to help soften and moisturise new growth. Because it’s a watery moisturiser and uses a spray nozzle, application to those tough dry areas is so much easier and quicker. Scurl No Drip Activator can be purchased from most beauty supply stores.

3. Hairveda Whipped Crème Ends Hydration

A mid-weight cream based moisturiser; Whipped Crème Ends was originally created to be used with the baggie method. It has since become a staple moisturiser for both relaxed and natural heads and has a great mix of natural and effective ingredients like shea butter and castor oil. Its fluffy creamy texture sinks easily into dry parched locks, whilst its sweet sugary fragrance leaves you with edible smelling hair. You can get Whipped Ends Creme from the Curly Emporium website.

4. Giovanni Direct Leave-in Conditioner

For those looking for a more ‘natural’ product, GVN Direct Leave-in is about as natural as you will get. Chocked full of botanical extracts, natural oils and panthenol, this leave-in conditioner makes a great lightweight moisturiser. Low in oils but high in moisture, it keeps your hair hydrated without that greasy feeling. You can get GVN Direct Leave-in from most natural or wholefood retailers.

5. Joico Moisture Recovery Leave-in Moisturiser

A watery, spray based product that both softens and hydrates hair, this must-have item does triple duty as a leave-in, a moisturiser and a skin refresher. As with all Joico products, it contains a small amount of protein so will help strengthen as well as moisturise your fragile relaxed hair.  You can get Moisture Recovery Leave-in Moisturiser from official stockists and most online salon brand retailers.

Top 5 Moisturisers

If you’re looking for a good moisturiser you’ll want to consider one of the following. Here are products I have used and like and a few that I would like to use:

1. Leave-in conditioners

I didn’t realise until now that leave-in conditioners are just another type of moisturiser. You can apply most of them to your dry hair daily after you’ve spritzed your hair with water.

KCKTluv natural

My two favourite leave-in conditioners are currently: Kinky Curly Knot Today (KCKT) and LUV Naturals Leave-in conditioner. Luv Naturals is only available in the US.

darcys botanicals

2. Darcy’s Botanicals Avocado and Honey Twisting Cream

A great product. So good on my hair that I have two YouTube videos on it! Personally, my hair doesn’t twist well but I find it highly effective as a moisturiser.

beautiful textures moisturiser

3. Beautiful Textures Moisture Butter

This is next on my “hit list” – all the ingredients are natural and it’s coming in at GBP5.50 for an 8 oz (230 ml) jar. This is a great price for a natural product.

cherry whipped cream

4. Cherry Whipped Shea Body Butter

This is another one on the hit list. It’s only GBP4.95 for 280ml on At that price it is definitely worth a try.

5. Coconut Lemongrass Transition Creme 8oz

At GBP10.95 on the Curly Emporium this product is on the more expensive side but this is actually quite average for natural hair products. This product has good reviews and is well worth a try if you are transitioning. It is also by Darcy’s Botanicals.
